Seiko watch value by serial number

The serial dates your watch; the reference and the condition set the price. Date it here, then look up the reference in the price guide.

Possible production date, not a guaranteed date or an authentication. Production date is not the purchase date.

From serial to value in three steps

  1. Date it. Enter the serial above, with the caliber if you have it. The caliber is the first four characters of the case back number, and it narrows down which decade the serial belongs to.
  2. Name it. Read the full case back number, such as 6309-7040. That’s the reference.
  3. Price it. Find the reference in the price guide and pick the condition grade that fits the watch.

Why the year alone doesn’t set the price

Seiko made collectible watches and everyday ones at the same time. A serial dated 1969 could belong to a 6139 chronograph or to a plain dress watch, and the year can’t tell you which. The year narrows the field; the reference and the condition decide the price. That’s why the table on this page lists each reference’s years next to its sampled range, rather than a price for each year.

When the date does matter

The date can help tell an early version of a reference from a later one. Plus9Time notes that by 1976 only the B version of the 6139 movement was available, so a 6139 dated 1976 or later should have a 6139B, unless the movement or case back has been swapped. Where versions differ in what they sell for, the reference page says so.

Real examples

We’ll show three dated case backs here, one each from 1969, 1975 and 1982, as soon as we’ve photographed watches from our first sampling.

FAQ

Can I find my Seiko's value from the serial number alone?

No. The serial dates the watch, but the value depends on which reference it is and what condition it's in. Use the serial for the date, the case back number for the reference, then the price guide for the range.

Is an older Seiko worth more than a newer one?

Not by itself. The reference and the condition matter more than the year. Age matters most when it separates an early version of a reference from a later one.

Where is the serial number on a Seiko?

On the case back, stamped on its own line, separate from the case back number such as 6309-7040. Most vintage serials have six characters.
