Seiko 62MAS: the 1965 original vs the SPB143 and SPB453
The original 6217-8000 and 8001 next to Seiko's modern re-interpretations, spec by spec.
Quick answer
An original 62MAS suits someone who wants the 1965 watch itself and accepts a 60-year-old diver they can’t count on being water-tight, with some parts likely replaced. The SPB453 or SPB451 suits someone who wants the look on a watch they can swim with: 300 m, sapphire and a 72-hour movement, at $1,300 from Seiko USA in October 2026. The SPB143 they replaced is no longer in Seiko USA’s catalog.

How they wear
The original is the smallest of the three. Published diameters run from 37 mm to 38.2 mm, and Seiko itself put the 1965 diameter at 38 mm when it made the SJE093 re-creation. The SPB143 is 2.5 mm wider at 40.5 mm. The SPB451 and SPB453 trimmed that to 40.0 mm and 13.0 mm thick, with a shorter 46.4 mm lug to lug, so they sit closer to the original than the SPB143 did.
The details differ too. The original has an acrylic crystal and a bezel that turns both ways without clicks; the modern watches have sapphire and a click bezel.
The price gap
We’ll add the original’s sold range after our first sampling of eBay sales in November 2026, split by crown version and condition. On the modern side, Seiko USA listed the SPB451 and SPB453 at $1,300 in October 2026. The SPB143 is no longer in its catalog, so expect to find it pre-owned or as remaining dealer stock.
The case for the original
It’s Seiko’s first diver, the one Seiko Museum calls Japan’s first 150 m water-resistant watch. The risk is what’s been changed in 60 years. Replaced crowns, relumed dials and swapped case backs all turn up, and the small-crown 6217-8000 was only made for a few months, so check its crown, tube and case closely. Read our 62MAS buying checks before you pay, and budget for a service by an independent watchmaker.
The case for the modern one
A new SPB451 or SPB453 is rated to 300 m, has a sapphire crystal and a movement that hacks, hand-winds and runs about three days, and Seiko services it. You get the 62MAS shape without the risks of a 60-year-old diver.
Other 62MAS re-makes
- SLA017 (2017): Seiko’s first re-creation, 39.9 mm, with the 8L35 movement; 2,000 pieces.
- SJE093 (2023): a second re-creation at the original’s 38.0 mm diameter, with the slim 6L37 movement.
- SJE117 and SJE119 (2024): the Marinemaster 1965 Heritage line, 39.5 mm, 6L37, $2,800 at Seiko USA in October 2026.

FAQ
Is the Seiko SPB143 discontinued?
It's no longer in Seiko USA's catalog; its product page returned a 404 when we checked on October 27, 2026. Seiko says the SPB451 and SPB453 of 2024 are an update of it, with a slimmer case, the 6R55 movement and 300 m water resistance.
Is the SPB143 a 62MAS reissue?
Not strictly. Seiko calls it a modern re-interpretation inspired by the 62MAS. The faithful re-creations are the SLA017 of 2017 and the SJE093 of 2023.
Which 62MAS reissue is closest in size to the original?
The SJE093. Seiko says its 38.0 mm case matches the 1965 original's diameter. The SPB143 is 40.5 mm and the SPB451 and SPB453 are 40.0 mm.
Can you swim with a vintage 62MAS?
Not without a pressure test, and even then we wouldn't. It was rated to 150 m in 1965, but gaskets harden and crowns get replaced. The modern SPB451 and SPB453 are rated to 300 m.
